Love at first sight

Love at first sight

A Story by Vaibhav Singh Thakur

It was the first day of our new session. My friends had either chosen commerce or the non-medical stream and I was the lone one in the medical stream. Though there were a few more boys but we had been just friends since last two years and A bevy of few girls with whom I had a constant fights for last four to five years since primary classes were the least expected one strengthening our class population into double digits. The first class was of biology and we were asked to sit in the biology lab . Our biology ma’am was gone to principal office to discuss the few important issues regarding the new specimens and the instruments that were needed for the lab. Everyone was familiar with my rebellious behavior and therefore , I was avoided by them, as usual. Unperturbed by their ostracizing attitude, I kept sneaking into the specimen kept in the lab, whether it be the worms (Aschelminthes), insects (Arthropoda), mollusca etc.
“Hey! Why are you sitting like dumb there? Lets check this interesting stuff .” I said while swinging a chart of the reproductive system in my hands. Boys looked at me and shrugged their shoulder beckoning the negative response. The girls though had heard me but pretended as if I hadn’t uttered a word. Leaving the specimens apart, I reverted back to my table. I felt bored among them and my mind suggested some creativity. I scrawled down a picture on black board. I wanted to draw a specimen that I had just stared , but instead of octopus it appeared like crab and below it I had written Octopus. I could hear the girls giggling over my drawing, precisely sarcastically making fun of it. I was just going to put the harsh remarks over their disdained attitude when someone knocked the door softly.
“Look! Who is there? As least do a worthy work here.” One of the girls said and chuckled with her friends.
“Whatever.” I replied and rushed towards the door.
Before I could open the door, the girl with semi-framed glasses, opened the door slowly from outside. She was almost about my height, just an inch shorter. My eyes got riveted on her face that was glowing with sparkled eyes.
“Is class XI B sitting here in lab?” She asked.
“Umm..” I couldn’t utter a word and kept staring at her. I was profoundly lost in her beauty. She peered at me waiting for the reply.
“Are you alright?’ She asked in a perplexed manner. Might be she was startled by my intricate behavior.
“Yeah. I am fine.” I finally managed to speak something relevant. “And yes. Class XI B is here.”
“Hi. I am Shikha. Pleasure to meet you.” She said with a wide smile that evinced her front incisors.
“Hi.. Hi.. I am.. Varun. ” I replied with a fumbling tone. For the first time I stammered while talking.
“All right. Can you get a side please or will you keep me standing here?” She said subtly.
“No.. No.. I mean yes.. yes.. Oops! Sorry! I mean please enter.” I replied shyly and confusedly with the drops of sweats tricking down from the forehead. She smiled at my silly actions and entered the lab. I closed the door while wiping off the sweat.
That was the day when I fell in love with her. The love at first sight.
