Counting Colours; a requiem to changing seasons

Counting Colours; a requiem to changing seasons

A Poem by J

It is a brooding slant of light

that bends watery shadows

lengthening my bones

exposing desires disguised

as apple cheeks and frosty breath

steel gray sidewalks that chronicle footsteps

of left-footed imprints

licking summer off my chin

leaving the taste of defiant rain

on shivering lips

tucked in my back pocket

with old news and worn down heels,

the familiar bareheaded, seasonable

reasonable reason

discontinued

winging its way to skies gone

out

        weeping

colour sucked to the depth of shuddering

suns, closing doors.

***

My palms shiver, quiver, wander in

innocent places i never belonged

wondering, wishing someone

would add some symmetry, rhyme

reason

to the coming season.

This is a metaphorical political piece not meant to invite debate, just my wanderings at a low point of confidence in this country's future properity

You leave the reader feeling as cold as the metaphorical landscape you've drawn out in the lines, which is a great way to get people to see through your eyes and the point of view for this political piece. I love the sombre tone and the last stanza's flickering flame of hope... almost as if against a sturdy wind. A very vivid poem, wonderful job.

Politics...? I missed that on first pass but metaphorically speaking it's there. Destitution is well represented as a creeping, insidious drain on beauty, pleasure, and...poetically, freedom. Giving it away, selling it, bartering it for the flicker of today...then finding the future, the present, gaunt and ill, not assured of anything robust or rosey...again.

A very daring and successful effort...!

the upside is that there are a lot of people walking around sober, after a long binge...believe me that will vote in a difference...but when i read this, i wasn't thinking politics
