A Chapter by Austin

Hey. My name is Austin Blair and I am 14 years old. By picking up this book, you have probably decided that you need some help surviving high school (or you're just bored!). But, either way, let me help you out with whatever you need by giving you some great tips and sharing my experiences through the teen's most exciting and challenging journey ever: high school.

So, let's start before the beginning. It's back to school season and your mom is buying all of your new outfits and everything for your first day at high school! Rule #1: Do What Mom Says! This is a very hard rule for some teens, but it comes very resourceful. You'll find out a lot as you read through more of this book.

I remember that it was the middle of August and very hot! We were going up to Wal-Mart and we were going through new things for me to wear, so that I can look good. She called for me and showed me this very nerdy shirt (which I really didn't need since I was already most of a nerd and didn't want to add to that). So, I said that I really didn't like that shirt and she said, "I don't care! You're wearing this sometime!" So, that was the end of that.

Then, a couple of days later, I had gotten a letter in the mail that was about freshman orientation. It wasn't mandatory, but I thought that it would be helpful, which brings me to Rule #2: Always Go To The Freshman Orientation! If your school doesn't have one, then have them try to get one because this can help you out immensely! I went there with her and they showed us a video that the seniors had made the year before explaining everything about high school and blah, blah, blah...No one really cares about that. The only thing that I cared about was my schedule and my locker combination which they gave me right there.

I looked through my schedule and had all of the same required subjects like history, english, etc. But, then I look at my Geometry class (nerd, remember?) and I see that I have the same exact teacher that I had for Algebra I last year! Rule #3: Don't Be Surprised If You Have A Teacher More Than Once! This is very likely because they teach multiple things. I had gotten Spanish I my freshman year and I took that same teacher through Spanish II & III in my sophomore and junior years.

So, they took us on a little tour through the school and showed us all of our classes. Oh darn! Rule #4: Take Advantage of the Tour! There is nothing worse than going to school on the first day and waddling around trying to figure out what classes are where. It is very normal to not know where things are the first day, but trust me! It is awesome to know where everything is beforehand, especially if they give you a map!

After the tour, we go to our lockers and practice trying to open them. Now, for me, these lockers were a bit different than the ones back at the middle school, so it took me a couple of tries to get the dang thing open! Rule #5: Know Your Combination! You will definently need this, but you should be able to get it open within the first 2 days or so.

Then, you just sit back, enjoy the car ride home (and the rest of your summer!) and plan on getting back to your regular routine of going to bed at 9:00 PM and getting up at 7:00 AM! Uggh...

I think the flow is very natural, which is good. It's funny, but not ridiculous. This isn't typically the type of book I'd ever pick up as a rule, but I do like your writing style.

I think I'd like it better if you tried to incorporate these ideas and suggestions and convey them through characters/a plot rather than just straight up advice. That's just me, though.
