LifeA Story by Jihyun Yoo
She faces the mirror
A peculiar type of glass that supposedly echoes what it sees
Every detail of the her reflection presented with raw accuracy
So bluntly honest
God spent too much time on this masterpiece
He went through too much trouble
Dotting each blemish with supreme precision
Axing away every glamorous curve
To leave her with the striking hips of a ten-year-old boy
She slides her hands down the sides of her body
Her two hands stray so distant from each other
One could surely write the two their own tragic love story
Nevertheless, she secures the last pearl button on her favourite blouse
It makes her waist appear suspiciously slim
Ha! Take that rib fat
She drops her eyes
To look at the piles of paper left on her desk
Each printed slice of tree
Born to be stained with black ink
To only return with a stamp of judgment
On its value of ink-stainness
She wonders how people do it
How people are able to read a thick compact collection of ingenious thoughts and facts
And remember every damned idea
All to correctly blot out the bubbles that test our very intelligence
Blame the brain made out of lettuce
That contains an intricate web of vegetable fibres - that forget one too many times -
How to transmit the most important vegetable signals
Needed to attain the most pleasant vegetable life...
Quickly, she organizes her collection of swaggerous knowledge into her pink binder
Everything’s set to go
Dragging one heavy foot in front of the other
She lets her apartment door squeak shut behind her
And a sigh of relief follows as she checks her watch
She won’t be late for class today - phew
A tingle of joy dances by the corner of her lips
With looks comparable to an elementary boy
and grades on edge as a K-drama ending scene
She’s yet to find out what makes life worth living
But because today, she made it out on time
She puts on her earphones
Begins her favourite track
And happily heads out
To start one more humorous day
