She hated the figure that looked stared back from the mirror. This dreaded girl was Renya and she had one too many insecurities. The boy she was desperately in love with, Percy, told her day and night how flawlessly beautiful she was, she just agreed with him but always doubted it.
"Cut down on the sugars", she whispered to her. Less and less food she devoured each day. She starved her self to become skinny. Even though she lost several pounds, she believes that she can lose more. "Don't compare yourself to other girls, you are perfect the way you are. Look around, you compare yourself to celebrities and wonder why you can't look like them and try to become them. I didn't fall in love with them, I fell in love with you." That statement was the last thing Percy told her before he left for the weekend to see his Grandma in Florida.
Wondering what to do about her flaws, Renya turned her radio on low and out of the speakers came the song she loves, Bring Me Back to Life by Evanescene. Humming along to the tune she heard that terror slam the front door, she didn't even realize what time it was. The normal time for her father to come home and start yelling. He works two jobs, 14 hours straight and came home to give his family bull s**t. When he usually didn't work he was a great father but since his jobs it was all different.
Storming up the stairs already pissed he slammed his door shut. Her mother was out food shopping and Renya was "watching" her brothers and sister. She thought it was idiotic how an 12 year old, 9 year old, and 6 year old cant stay home alone for an hour. But she sucked it up because this was the only time she can cry and make fun of herself till she cried even more.
She always waited for that one text from him to make her smile. No matter what he said made her smile in any mood she was in. Percy was her savior and her boyfriend. They have been through hell and back and still are together. But tonight felt different. He hasn't replied to her text and its been almost an hour and he usually answered before an half an hour. Now that she thought about it, he hasn't text anyone all day. Now she's thinking about it all, he wasn't even in school.
Tears subsided and fear swelled in her face. She knew, hopefully she was right, he wouldn't so anything and he just got his phone taken away. Still panicked she dashed down the stairs, her intentions were to FLOUT her parents rule, but he lives a few blocks away, biking will take a few minutes. Then her mom walked in. She believed that her mom is out to get. Her moms intentions though was that to make Renya tough and ready for any situation, and you don't learn from love.
"Where are you going, darling?" Her moms piercing icy blue eyes saw right through her. Whenever she looked directly into her moms eyes it felt like the room became 20 degrees colder.
"Um..." She need to think of something quick and smart. "I'm going to a walk to the park, is that alright?" She relaxed when the tension subsided.
"Well, did you finish your homework? Is your room clean? Did you practice all your lines for the play? Did you sing your solos?" Her mom will keep her away from all humanity.
"Yeah... it is cleaner than before... I finished all the necessary parts... And yes I practice three time" Renya was use to the bombarded of questions whenever she asked to go anywhere.
"Well.. I suppose but only for a little while, be back before 8:30." She turned and the clock just struck'd 7:34. Gives her a little less than an hour, better than nothing.
"Okay thanks mom", she dashed out the front door and screamed I love you while steadily speeding towards Percy's house. The ride to his house would of been peaceful, if she wasn't so worried about him. Slowly slowing down to a complete stop dead center of his house, she saw no lights on. This made her relieved and worried. It could mean many possible outcomes, some bad and some good. Getting off her bike and slowly walked towards the lifeless house seemed completed wrong and some how right at the same exact time.
Creepingly she knocked on the door and hopingly someone would answer the door but no reply was given. This worried her even more. Renya knew Percy resented his mom and step dad so he wouldn't have gone out with them if they went out with his sisters. So it was something major if they all left together, or Percy is inside hiding or sleeping.
She knows if went in with no one welcoming her in, it would be considered breaking and entering but she knew this was more than important that life itself. She peered into the crack of the opening of the door. No movement was shown. Whispering extremely quietly she said, "Percy, are you home?" No response.
Not knowing what to do, she just closed the door and walked away. Tears started to flow down the sides of her cheeks and she just got on her bike and rode away. She never looked backed. She walked in her house a few minutes before the curfew her mom has given her, it was dead silent. Where is everyone she thought to herself. Maybe they have gone out for dinner, but what else would it be? There must be something else that is going on that she doesn't know about. Her not knowing what was going on, that worried her so much. She always knew what happened and when it happened.
Dialing impatiently her mothers phone, her phone buzzed. This gave her a mini heart attack and she dropped her fragile phone. When it floor it made a hollow sound that echoed throughout the house, then silence devoured the house again. Picking up her phone, slowly turning it over, she opened her messages. The first named that was shown was his, all it said was "I'm Sorry..." Instead of calling her mother she instinctively called Percy and see what was happening.
Three rings passed and nothing yet. Four... Five... Then his voicemail answered. Devastated, knowing he has his phone but didn't answer had killed her a little on the inside. A little angry came from that and she threw her phone across the room and it's back came undone from the device and flung in the opposite direction. What was happening she thought. If he did anything it would destroy her, his been months clean now and hasn't said anything about the depressing topic that lurks in her mind, and his mind as well. Her phone buzzed, a call was coming through. Running straight for the phone she picked up and the word Mom first appeared. Excitement drained her face. She answered, "Hey mom." But it wasn't mom. Was replied was Nathan, her twelve year old brother's voice, " Percy's dead." All her hopes were VAPORIZED, her love was gone forever.
Renya stood and mouth wide open, dropped her phone and just stared straight. Slowly, one by one a tear fell down her cheek and off her face. He obviously wasn't lying because he was so serious and why would he lie about that. Picking up the phone and gathering up the words and courage to reply to her brother, she said, "Where are you?"
"I don't know, dad just got a call from his parents and he told everyone to get in the car." He still sounded frightened. "We are somewhere close by our house, the park is down the street, we are on Lagoon Dr, we all are outside." Instinctively, she hung up the phone and headed straight for Lagoon Drive. Non stoping pedaling her pink beach cruiser. She knew exactly where they were, even if they weren't outside. They were at his best friends, Carl, his actual only friend. DELIBERATELY going slower than usually because she'll have more time to think.
