the things that upset you

the things that upset you

A Poem by Katie Foutz Voss
"

prioritize

"
The tipping, teeter-totter,
world lacking balance
tumbles off the axle
into the hands of God.

And what will you say?
What words will spill
from unworthy lips
in a worthless explanation.

"We closed our mouths
to defend ourselves!
"We killed the violent
for a moment's peace!
"We fought for our enemies,
and wept in their absence,
we covered your Salvation
with their Sin."

The unspinning Earth
will lay still in His great palms,
and He will not ask you again.

He will know at once
the crimes in your pockets
which you carried so proudly
like a handful of change
or a ring of keys to shiny cars.

You went to war for the tyrants.
You kept alive a killer.
In the wake of their fallen statues
you will rage most bitterly,
while there are still
widowed mothers
and children killed
safe in the womb,
still hungry men waiting
for someone to speak
in their place.

Very well written, imagery and a message... Kudos.

Not only is this a powerful piece in general, but the opening and closing in particular really pack a punch. My favourite lines were "What words will spill / from unworthy lips" and "and children killed / safe in the womb, / still hungry men waiting / for someone to speak / in their place". I also really liked "the crimes in your pockets" and "The tipping, teeter-totter," as stand-out single lines.
