52 card pick up

52 card pick up

A Poem by jesswrecks

And
I swear I was a different girl once.
The pages of my life were full of highlights
and post-it notes, poetic quotes from the minds
of Gottlieb to Bukowski written in chicken scratch.

And I heard

her voice on the other end of line,
say “I love you; I’ll be home soon.”

And I read the cards,
flat out on your
dining room table.

Abort.
God.
Abort.

And I read the cards,
flat out on her
dining room table.

And I heard
my voice turn her I love you
into " when is the baby due?"

The deck  flew.

                                                                               52 card
                                                                                pick up.
And the phoned “clicked”. I learned to sleep
with the television on and past the alarms.

Latin tongues, empty bottles, cigarette ash.
You left the table.
Coffee grounds, open roads, nursery rhymes.
I left the table.
                                                                               52 card
                                                                                pick up.
And
I swear I’ll be a different woman now.
The pages of my life surpass card games, re
-written for a new set of city limits, Tuesdays
mornings, longer afternoons and better nights,
greater plans for tomorrow, for my son.

This is... wow. Amazing. I love this piece so much, it hols so much emotion and so much meaning and i love the use of "52 card pickup" and the connotations that are presented with that game. It has such a good rhythm and flow to it, and your use of certain words and certain metaphors is very impressive. I love it! Keep it up! xx
