augustandstreetlights

A Poem by jesswrecks

our story is still
projecting off
the asphalt of
southline and
circle drive, hid

-ing in the grits
of rocks, broken
glass and stray
cats; I spent our
whole first year

sewing my legs
together with lies;
and you slipped
a dose of heartache
between my lips;

we swore to remain
intact and upright;
but you had a son
and I drank too much,

trying to figure out
how to impress you
with the way I spoke;
and you left for Indiana
and I made promises;

contracts for lovers,
unlimited morphine
for a maximum of
three years, and distance;
you signed your name
           near my ribs, for always
