She Died In That TownA Poem by Jessica GillitzerRecently reminded of a past I put far behind me, still want to forget.
Do you remember me?
The quiet girl that sat across from you in class Half smile to hide her fears Long sleeves to cover up the bruises Never missed a day because home was a nightmare How she spent her days pen in hand buried within pages of her notebook... Telling stories to pages with sealed lips Do you remember me? The girl who wandered the railroad tracks alone Smoking a cigarette and dreaming of where the parallel steel could take her Laying on that cold steel hoping she wouldn't have to make the walk home again How she seemed to be everywhere in town but at home How everyone saw her but none knew her... Would she have spoken if you smiled Do you remember me? The broken girl sitting in the snow smoking a joint in plan sight How she would silently accept the unwanted hands on her in the hall at school The times you'd pass her crying alone on the stairs The way she would shrink when her name was called in class When she came to school hair dyed black and eyes painted dark That girl without a name, without a home... Without a voice If you do, please forget her... She died in that town © 2019 Jessica GillitzerAuthor's Note
