Burn It Down

Burn It Down

A Poem by Jessica Gillitzer

Burning it down
Every moment drowned, every hope measured pound for pound
Dreams for kindling, within me an air supply dwindling
Desires flicker and fade like embers, holding on to the fire I remember
Burning me to the ground, no helping hands around
Still burning it down
If it's a happiness I can't have I'll settle for half
Have to breath, have to see, still only half of who I used to be
This fire consumes, devours without discretion and with no discernible direction
Since I started it I realized I'd always be a part of it
Always burning it down
I can't protect myself from me, can't defend against the monster in the mirror I refuse to see
I drench my existence in kerosene, light a match and create a scene
Make myself an arson victim, It's my only system
If there's nothing left, there's nothing to lose... sometimes that's easier to choose
Forever relighting ashes
Forever burning it down until the pain passes
