A Silent Death

A Silent Death

A Poem by Jessica Neves

Pain. The annoying friend,

Always in the background lurking,

Waiting for the perfect moment to attack,

For the perfect moment to seep its way in

Condemning all in its path.

Pain. Striking once again.

Brain inflamed with confusion,

Igniting a violent storm of fires,

A chaos that won’t end, a blood bath

Seizing to leave survivors, seizing to just fade away.

Multiple encounters, proving this war is long from over.

Like a wild animal, it feasts upon lost souls,

Tearing them apart piece by piece,

Silencing their terror-filled screams

Until all they can do is accept their inevitable fate.

Pain. A silent death, hovering over

As it tightens its grip, stabbing slowly

It happily watches as blood trickles down,

Turning into a river, it’s gained its strength

To consume the precious thing, we call life.

Pain. Looking for the vulnerable

It wears a mask hiding its gruesome, devil-like face

Only to surprise its prey,

Clawing at them,

Embodying who they once were.

Day by day, it spreads

Claiming more victims, paralyzing them with fear

So that they forget what it’s like to be brave,

So that they no longer desire to fight,

So that they become victims instead of survivors.
