Give Me Water

Give Me Water

A Poem by Jessica Jaufmann

Give Me Water

My lips peeled and red metallic liquid touched

My tongue.

I swallowed the copper, it’s like

Silver, not as good as gold.

The heaving in my chest hasn’t stopped for

Weeks, and

I ache.

There is only orange sand among the war of thirst.

The drought came upon us heavy,

We were in a dystopic wasteland,

Fighting each other for it.

As the ground grew dry,

No longer birthing its green, aquatic babies,

We hoarded it.

We kept it for ourselves and never told

Anyone.

To them, we were suffering too.

Those who we knew,

Trusted,

They came too often.

When our wells dried, our hearts did too.

There is no more water now,

We swallowed it all.

Wow. This is amazing. The imagery you use sucks us right in, and I can only imagine this was easy for you. Very asthetically pleasing, but built on shards. Perfect. Totally about to stalk your entire page!

Favorite line, speaks of a prophetic truth, "There is only orange sand among the war of thirst."

Pretty cool write (pun intended). Great imagery. Learned a new word, "dystopic". All around good write. Enjoyed it.
