The Art of Love and Loss

The Art of Love and Loss

A Poem by PretentiousWriterPerson

Run your hands along my cheek
Feel my skin beneath your fingers
Touch the tears that drown my eyes
And heal the pain that lingers

Hold me close and kiss my lips
Until I can forget
The thoughts that fill my restless head
My demons and my debt

Let me fall asleep
In the cave where your heart rests
To the gentle rise and fall
As I lay across your chest

Let me drift away
To the silence that is art
And the slow and rhythmic beating
Of your bruised and battered heart

In the morning I shall wake
And my tears they will be dry
But the one thing that is certain
Is that one day we'll all die

Then all this will be nothing
Nothing but a dream
But a beautiful and fleeting
Escape from what things seem

You'll be nothing but a memory
A fond but passing thought
Our lessons nearly over
We've learnt what has been taught

Still this will never ease
The pain of letting go
For we will try with all our might
Hold on to what we know

The art of love and loss
Is impossible to master
For art is ever changing
Hearts ever beating faster

So all that we can manage
Is to tread with cautious feet
Hope that when we fall in love
We won't resurface incomplete

For if there's one thing in this world
That's impossible to glue
It's the remnants of a heart
That I broke by loving you
