Coyote

Coyote

A Poem by Jess Morton

Co-yo-te
The friend of silence

I know coyotes like strangers
A glimpse dashing like film reels

The familiar nature of golden camouflage
Pressing a nose to the sandy ground

I’m starting to know strangers
As myself

Who am I pretending to be?
Give me sanctuary, please

Silence for a hunt
Stepping only where necessary

The Winter is coming
And Spring hasn't even arrived

The friend of silence
Finally whispers familiar

Jess,
If a poem is not thought provoking, then what is the point?
I live in the Texas panhandle and am serenaded by coyotes every night. They have killed my flock of hand-raised chickens... I KNOW they are a friend of silence but are not afraid to break it, either. At the core of what I'm seeing here is the desire for silence, and possibly solitude... can you have one without the other? How long have you gone in a single stretch without seeing or speaking to another human being? Have you smelled the ground of what you believe? Do you pretend to be a stranger to yourself? Is a sanctuary necessary for the self-aware, or a place to hide? Is the search more important than the finding?

PS. The second stanza is a little awkward because of the word "like" used twice in short succession.

I like your expressions and portrayals of Coyotes. Many good lines to pick from.
