Part 7: Alice and BenniA Chapter by Jess HoldenI ran after Jon once he was out of my sight; I couldn't live with the decision I had made, and I needed to make things right. "Jon wait! Please!" He got in his car and reved the engine, looking back at me with an evil look in his eye. He switched gears, and sped off towards the hospital, leaving me in a cloud of dust and dirt. I ran over to my car and whipped out my keys, getting in and tearing after him, the gas pedal slammed almost to the floor. The hospital wasn't far, but it would've taken forever to walk. I changed lanes in a despirate attempt at catching up to his car, maybe flag him down and tell him to pull over. After a few minutes of dodging in and out of other rushing cars, I decided that I would have to take my time, even though I had little left. I came up to a yellow light, and stepped on the gas and reved forward, almost slamming into a turning car. The hospital signs started to thicken, and I knew I was close, but Jon's car was nowhere in sight. I pulled in the parking lot of the local market that was directly accross from the hospital, leaving the keys in the ignition as I ran accross the road at top speed. A few cars honked, and one clipped my knee and knocked me to the pavement, but it didn't slow me down at all. Once I got to the other side, I saw Jon pull up to the front doors, and jump out of the door, storming in the hospital. I ran after him, my knee burning from the deep gash caused by the car, trying to keep my eyes on where he was going. I had no idea where his sisters room was, nor did I even really know what she was sick with, but I knew I had to get there before Jon did. I needed to tell him not to do it; don't end her life. I followed after him, until I saw him run into an elevator and close the door behind him. "Goddamnit!" I screamed out, limping off towards the elevator door, grasping my knee in agony. There was an obvious line of blood trailing me as I walked, and a puddle forming in my shoe. I saw the numbers light up above the metal door, showing what level Jon was on. Level 8. I breathed out a sigh, and punched the elevator door button, waiting only a few seconds before another door opened. I quickly limped over to it and hit floor 8, the door closing and taking me up. Once the doors opened, I ran out, and saw Jon entering a room not 5 meters from me. "Jon!" I screamed at him, everyone stopping to stare at me, inlusing Jon. He looked down at my leg in shock, but continued in the room. Using the las amount of enery left in my damaged leg, I ran as fast as I could over to the doorway, and threw myself at Jon. "Don't do it! I changed my mind!" He shoved me off him, groaning slightly. "Why?! You don't care, so why should I?" "She's your family for Christ sake Jon!" I yelled in his face as he helped me up. He helped me to the bed beside his sisters. I never really knew what his sister looked like, I just assumed that it was like Jon, but she wasn't. She has the most beautiful pale skin, and brown hair, unlike Jon's tan and black hair. They almost looked nothing alike; they had different lips, noses, and jawlines. "She's dying Alice," he said, begining to tear up, "my mom and dad knew this was going to happen to her, and I don't want her to suffer anymore than she already has!" His words hit me rather hard; this was the first time I had ever heard Jon speak with true love in his voice. It wasn't that he was a loveless person, he just wasn't as compassionate as he was right now. "I know you care about her Jon," I murmured to him, his eyes never leaving her bed, "but maybe you should give her one more shot." "Like what Alice?! The doctors even gave up on her... Their's no hope left for her..." His voice was distant, probably in the memories of the times he has had with his sister. "What's her name Jon?" I asked, trying to make eye contact with him. "Benni," he sounded cold, "and she can't go through more pain Alice, please," he begged, "no more." © 2011 Jess HoldenAuthor's Note
