Part 6: Richard and Skylar

Part 6: Richard and Skylar

A Chapter by Jess Holden

I stood there, green grass beneath my feet, the sun setting warmly in the background, and the wind lightly blowing my long hair from my face. It needed to be cut, and soon, before people started confusing me with a hippie.

I bent down, my knees cracking painfully, as I wiped away the dirt and dust that had collected atop of Tina's grave. I kept my hand rested on the cold marble, my head bowed and my eyes closed as I remembered the night at the lake. It pained me to know that I had failed that suicide attempt, but it brought me great joy to know I lived.

"I miss you Tina," I said, standing to my full height, keeping my hand on the stone. I breathed out a sigh, as I opened my eyes and saw a young girl. She couldn't have been more than 15 or 16, but she looked exahusted.

She has the same look that I once did.

She was standing a few graves in front of Tina's, just starring at the tombstone. I began to make my way over to her, my hands placed in the pockets of my dress pants, my head still bowed.

"Hello," I said cheerfully, hoping to somehow brighten this dark twilight. She didn't look up, nor did she give any sign that she had heard me. I nodded and stood beside her, my eyes trying to focus in on the tiny writing.

On the stone, it was makred:

William Jenson

April 4 1940- August 20 2011

Loving father.

I looked over at the girl and noticed her red eyes and clenched fists. "I'm so sorry about your father," I said sadly, feeling her pain, "it will get better for you."

"How?" She said suddenly, whipping her head over towards me, anger filling her voice.

"How is anything suppose to get better?!" I shrugged back, almost knocking my glasses off my face and falling into another grave.

"Hey look, I'm sorry, I just know what you're going through!" I said loudly back, "I went through the same emotions when I was your age."

"Back in the stone age gramps?" She asked sarcastically, tears welling up in her eyes, and just barley falling over the rim.

"Hey, I'm only 34, give me a break," I said smiling, as she scuffed out a laugh and wiped her face.

"Yeah, well, I'm only 16 so..." She looked over at me with a smile on her face, the light back in her eyes.

I liked that, that look, it's a look of hope.

"I'm Richard," I stuck my hand out, making eye contact with her before she grabbed my hand, "I'm Skylar."

"it's nice to meet you Skylar," I said, wrapping my arms around her shoulders in a new friendship kind of way.

"C'mon," I said, motioning to the local coffee shop across the road, "I'm buying."
