Part 5: Bennie and SkylarA Chapter by Jess Holdenmight be a bit confusingWhen the doctor told me that I was going to die, I thought he was kidding. I mean, I had nothing more than a fever and a few body pains from soccer, how could that mean I'm going to die? Once all the tests came back, telling me the hard truth, I begged the doctor to fix me. "You must have gotten my tests mixed up with someone else's! This can't be me!" I screamed and cried at the doctor; he looked too scared to speak. My mother had no reaction, she just left the room with my father. I never saw them cry or even get sad; it was like they knew I was going to die as a teen and just couldn't wait to see me gone. "Benni, I'm sorry to tell you this but these are your test results. Now, we can start a treatment that has been pretty successful..." I drowned out what he said after that with the constant thought that I was gone. I was nothing more than a ghost just waiting in line to get the white bed sheet. The doctor hoocked me up to an IV, and left the room, leaving me alone with 2 other beds, one full, the other empty. The empty one had an older girl sitting beside it. Her eyes were red from crying, with black make up stained on her cheeks. I watched her as she just starred at the empty bed, barley breathing, just crying. I wondered what she was going through; was it anything like me? Was she dying too? I got off the hard bed, rolling my IV cart along with me, and made my way to her side, quietly observing. "Hi," I said, hoping not to startle her or upset her in any way. She had shoulder length brown hair, wearing a white sweater that was obviously too big for her small figure. She had pale white skin that seemed to be paler in the lights of the hospital. "What do you want?" She asked, her voice as dead as she looked, her eyes shifting from the spot on the bed to her feet. "Why are just just sitting here? Are you alright?" I asked, placing one hand on her shouler in a comforting manor. She was freezing cold, but not shaking which worried me. "It's all my fault," she whispered just loud enough so I could hear her. "What is?" "He died... Looking for me." Her last words were rushed as a new wave of tears began, shoving her face into her hands. I bent down to come face to face with her, my hand resting on her knee. Hearing someone sob is one of the worst sounds in the world, and I would try anything to get her to feel better. "Hey, no it wasn't, no it wasn't," I gently whispered to her, patting her leg in a rhythmic way. She took her face out of her hands and looked at me, her crystal blue eyes sparkling, and hugged me. She cried hard into my shoulder as I gently stroked her back, soothing her. After a moment of hugs and crying, she released me and starred into my eyes. "Thanks," she said, wiping the trails of black make up away, "I needed that..." She trailed off, starring at the bed again. "What's your name?" I asked, holding her hand as I spoke. "I'm Skylar, and you are?" She asked, turning to me with a small smile on her face. "I'm Benni, so what happened Skylar?" © 2011 Jess HoldenAuthor's Note
