Part 2: Richard.

Part 2: Richard.

A Chapter by Jess Holden

The moonlight lit up my shoes as I starred over the edge of the dock. I hadn't been swimming since I was six years old and lived in a cottage at the edge of town.

Back then, it was just me, my mom, my dad, and sister Tina, the ideal image of a family; and frankly, that's what we were.

We were just an image, an act, put on for the rest of the world to watch as we laughed together, smiled together, even had many family outings and picnics.

But you couldn't hide the scars, the blood that poured almost every night.

Somedays I wonder what would've happened if one of us spoke up against the abuse; would everything have still happened the same? Would I still be standing here, thinking about scars, blood and lies?

I started to undo the buttons on the top of my shirt, slipping my shoes off at the same time. I needed to swim, to forgive myself for not saying anything. I threw my shirt back towards land, and looked deeply into my reflection.

In it, I saw a tired 19 year old, who's pale green eyes looked dead. He looked like he hadn't slept in years; he had no light in his eyes anymore, not like earlier in the night.

I sighed and watched the image change from me to Tina, the same pale green eyes and the same shade of tan skin.

I didn't jump at this image, I knew it would come. I knew Tina never really left the lake, even after her body already had; I always felt a presence, up until the day my parents decided to move away.

"Tina," I said using the breath I had been holding in for a moment or two, sounding more tired than I looked. She smiled back, and held her tiny arms open for a hug, filling me with joy.

She forgave me.

"I'm sorry for what-"

"It's okay Richy," her voice came clear as day, "I'll always forgive my big bro."

Her image became blurred, wiping the tears from my eyes and taking a few steps back. I took in a deep breath, and let it out slowly, before taking a run at the water, flinging myself off the edge of the dock, and into the dark, cold water of the lake.
