I Want to Write PoetryA Poem by Gerald RayA poem about the poems the poet would like to write.
I want to write poetry
About the wind and the sky About the beauty of roses and the wings of a butterfly About love and laughter and life’s simple joys When we were just children like all girls and boys About married love that has lasted all those years Of raising a family through countless hardships and too many tears About arriving at old age, the final paying of earthly dues About springtime and raindrops as life’s cycle renews About summers and front porches and magical swings About that feeling of contentment a warm summer evening brings About the beauty of babies as they dream in their sleep As, content with their mother’s milk, they offer not a peep About the love shared with a child you don’t think you can live without Though you know one day you will have to find a way there’s no doubt About friendships and kindnesses, which are really God’s outstretching hands About dreaming and scheming with that special someone, making clandestine plans Yes, I want to write poetry in all of its forms And as I sit here my mind already fills with ideas in swarms But wait! . . . Would that be at all fair!? Just to pretend the dark side isn’t there? “Yes”, I conclude as I hold this pen in my hand Let the dark side just lie there but caress beauty by sifting through life’s sand By trying to seduce the Prince of Darkness to the warmth of pure light By writing about justice and beauty with each sentence you write Beauty is noble, sometimes brave and always sincere So it will be the only language spoken here Yes, I want to write poetry! © 2014 Gerald Ray |
