Long Ago

Long Ago

A Poem by J. A. Perkins
"

For Ashley

"
We laid gazing at the moon.
She had the darkest brown eyes,
but they'd light up the night
like a silver moonrise...
We were talking about dreams
and New Mexico skies
while a whirling wind whispered
it's lonesome lullaby.
Though she'd laugh, I could tell
that, somewhere in her mind,
lay hidden more hurt than
she wanted me to find.
In the midst of the moment,
I told her, "Let it go...
We might lose, we might win,
but if we try, at least we'll know."
She couldn't stand to say it.
Though her voice never broke,
beneath the quiver of her lips,
her heavy heart spoke:
"I gave up on you, Love, long ago...
when I gave up on true love, I let all that go...
I hope you find new love and let it grow...
I gave up on you, Love, long ago..."
Endearing words are late spoken,
I'm just thinking out loud
about a heart that's been broken;
hope you hear them somehow...
Faded memories torn open,
pieces scattered on the ground.
Some I'll never lose.
Some will never be found.
Now the moon never glows
and the stars seldom shine,
and my love has been lost
somewhere in the sands of time,
But when I hear that gentle
whisper of the whirling wind's cry,
I think about that girl and
can't help but wonder why..
I gave up on you, Love, long ago..
When I gave up on true love, I let all that go..
I hope you find new love and let it grow..
I gave up on you, Love, long ago...
Sometimes I think about the girl
who had the darkest brown eyes.
Maybe they were darkened
by the shadows of all her goodbyes...
Memories are like shackles
that chain us to our past,
fleeting moments of condolence
though it seldom ever lasts.
She came around the other day
perhaps to paint a better picture
of the love that we'd mistaken
for a battered faith fixture.
She spoke out of turn and said,
"I hope that you've waited.."
But my love had grown cold
and my memories had faded.
I couldn't stand to say it.
Though my voice never broke,
beneath the quiver of my lips,
my heavy heart spoke:
"I gave up on you, Love, long ago..
When I gave up on true love, I let all that go..
I hope you find new love and let it grow..
I gave up on you, Love, long ago."
Endearing words are late spoken,
I'm just thinking out loud
about a heart that's been broken;
hope you hear them somehow...
