Phantom Bridge (Conclusion)

Phantom Bridge (Conclusion)

A Story by Jerry Ables

Much to his absolute terror, he recognized the three ghostly figures as Lucinda, Lucinda's mother and Lisa.  Suddenly, the wooden Hammond Bridge began to collapse.  Neal started to panic at the thought of crashing into the river below the bridge and the sight of his three murder victims laughing hysterically at him only added to his feelings of frenzy.  The bridge collapsed further and further until finally, his car fell into the river.  Now, he could see his three murder victims relishing their sweet delight of dragging his car to the bottom of the river, where he would also meet Luther Lyon's thirty three victims.  Neal's three victims joined in with the thirty three to look at him with evil grins, as if they'd all been craving their vengeance on him, and then, they all laughed hysterically at him.  Suddenly, Neal saw the river turn red with their blood and managed one terrified scream before drowning in his car at the bottom of the river.

The next day, someone had called to report that the Hammond Bridge was out.  An underwater search and rescue team had discovered Neal's car at the bottom of the river with a seat belt binding his dead body to the driver's seat.  Two men were standing at riverside, with policemen forbidding them to go further, and watched the car being pulled from the river.  They also watched as Neal's body was loaded into the ambulance to be taken to the morgue, and thought it sad that someone was killed trying to cross the bridge on the night before timber replacement had been scheduled.  Suddenly, it occurred to them that just maybe, no one had thought that anyone would try to cross the bridge at such a dead hour of night.
