Summer Of Blood

Summer Of Blood

A Poem by Jerry Ables

One summer many years ago,

There was a certain group of young people

Who had met a certain man

Who claimed he had the ability

To lead them to bright and happy lives

Soon, he began to tell them

That he'd rule a post-apocalyptic world

The first step toward which was to start a war

Where color would divide mankind

The youths shed innocent blood

In the name of his hateful plan

One man promised them the world

But gave them shattered lives

Where they pay for hideous deeds

They could've had bright futures

But traded them for a summer of blood

The first time I read this, I was quite baffled. But upon, my second read it made more sense. Exquisitely written.
