Before An Angry Faculty

Before An Angry Faculty

A Poem by Jerry Ables

The Young Aficionado stands before an angry faculty
for words he spoke in anger and hurt.
How he hopes he can help them understand
That his intentions are good!

He can't blame them for being angry with him,
but oh how he dreads what could happen to him
if he can't help them to realize
that he's not just being lazy, defiant, or unreasonable!

He listens while they speak their own anger:
How would you like to make a living
by trying to teach students that don't want to learn anything?
How would you like to be stuck trying to teach students
that just want to goof off and play all day
when they're supposed to be learning about the world
and preparing for life in it?

What you've said doesn't even make sense,
because we teachers do not, in fact, wish to make our living
by standing around and staring all day,
so you'd better get your story straight, young man,
and make sure you know what you're talking about!
We don't take kindly to your accusations, young man,
because we work hard to give our students a good education!
If you worked at this school and said what you did about us,
we'd be able to sue you for slander.

The Young Aficionado knows
that he brought this all on himself,
but all he can do now is break down, cry,
and make one last plea to avoid
severe punishment for his unkind words.

Now, The Young Aficionado can feel
that everything's going to be okay,
because the assistant principal has assured him
that all he has to do is stay after school on Monday,
and take notes on what the faculty has to say to him
in an effort to help him serve the intended purpose of school.
