The Invisible World

The Invisible World

A Story by Jeremy Muller

Contamination. It's everywhere. In the food we eat, plastered over everything we touch, in the very air we breathe. It coats every micro-millimetre of our bodies, both outside and in. The only thing that makes this infection even remotely bearable is that, much more often than not, the disease is invisible.

Ever heard the phrase, 'out of sight, out of mind'? Well, life, no matter how smeared and putrid, as long as we do not see, goes on.

Ever so often, though, this diseased and invisible world creeps over into our dimension. It is then the stark reality of what has cohabited our lives becomes all too real.

Bird flu, anthrax, botulism, brucellosis, cholera, Ebola, the Bubonic Plague, all and more have thrust their ugly heads into our lives producing very visible and horrifying effect.

Yet, life goes on. We live, we sicken, we overcome, and yet eventually, we die. What then, is the point? What drives our scientists and doctors, herbalists and shamans, to fight the losing battle against our contaminated world? Why strive to save lives that, despite all our best efforts, will lead only to certain death?

Herein lies the greatest disease of all: the stricken mind!

We, given life, believe ourselves immortal. We live like there is no end to the short span of time allotted to us. We are selfish in our lives, even the most benevolent among us. We crave the material, knowing it is immaterial. Comfort and health is paramount, and why shouldn't it be? After all, isn't 'the best that life has to offer' what we all should be aiming for?

Our minds tell us that we of oh! so little significance, are really the centre of our own universes. Nothing else matters except what we believe is right for us, our success, our talents, our bank balances, family, friendships, charities, fisticuffs, righteous indignation, out-and-out brawls, love, hate, temperance, attitude, character, acknowledgement, personalities, brotherhood, balance... lets face it, the world really is crazy.

And through it all there is another voice. A single, clear, pure melody that sounds its anthem across the cosmos. The music that our mentally unstable minds choose mainly to ignore, solely because it is too simple for our psychosomatic selves to comprehend. Even when we do, we immediately over-complicate it's very simple message.

So what of this siren? What has it got to do with us? Well, I'll tell you. It is a call to home. To where we really belong. Away from this diseased and imperfect world where the ever-ruling master is Death. To a place where the Reaper has no hold. And all we ever have to do is say, 'Yes! I accept!'

Of all the stories I have ever told, through all the muck that has spilled out of my own mind, I will leave you with a single verse, but don't expect me to just give it to you! As much as you spend time working for your material gains, as much as you spend time sprucing up your CVs, as much as you contemplate stabbing your fellow human beings in the back for better positions, better lovers, better life, so spend a few minutes looking up the following verse: John 3:16.

When you find it, if you have even given it a second thought after reading this, spend time understanding the sheer explosiveness of it's statement, of a declaration of love so profound, it eclipses absolutely everything else.

I have nothing left to say but, 'Go! read, and be blessed!'
