Starlit GazeA Story by Matthew MckelveyShort story
There once was a girl who fell in love with a star. Every night before she fell asleep she sat by her window, looked up to the small sparkle that sat brightly within the dark sky and said,
"Though you are not close to me, you always steal the air I breathe. When I see your beauty I am filled with awe. My heart beckons, can you hear its call?" One night, while she was trapped in the stars gaze, it began to fall from the sky. It quickly sank beneath the horizon and with a flash it ended its journey to the earth. The girl jumped to her feet and ran to the living room. She grabbed her coat and dashed out the door toward the stars light that was still glowing. Hours turned into days. She was starting to fear she would never reach her love. Four days in the star was finally in sight but her legs gave up on her when it was just out of reach. She drug herself toward it and, finally, she was able to grab it. She then softly held it to her chest and cried. Then the star spoke to her, "With my light that burns so bright I made consumable, all that's in sight. So, eat and drink without a care. For everything is clean and bare. I saw you dreaming of a life with me. I come to show you my heart and give you the key" And with this she ate and drank until she regained her strength. From that day forward she held that star so dearly no matter how much it hurt because she knew it would give her all the strength she would need, from all the love that it gave. © 2015 Matthew Mckelvey |
