Heart of GoldA Poem by Jennimy CricketInspired by a cliché phrase. You, my friend, have a heart of gold. But what of that? For metal is cold And lies unchanged through young and old; Unfeeling and unlearning. It feels not the softest of words The ones that oft’ cannot be heard The silent chorus of human bird- -song that oft’ drifts by unnoticed. I'd often wondered, through nights and days, How humans manufactured such a phrase As to liken the focus of poet’s gaze To a substance so unyielding. Is it to speak of your market worth? The rarity at which your kind is unearthed? The materialism which, since named at birth, Soon renders us all unseeing. So what can the merit of “Goldness” be? I shouldn’t like it to be said of me, I'd rather have a heart of flesh you see That would cycle life for ever. © 2010 Jennimy CricketAuthor's Note
