We're Here Now

We're Here Now

A Poem by Jenny Davis

It was one of those days...

The sun was shining,
you could see the moon in the blue-
and it was raining

The creaking of my shoes,
splashing as we walked-
reminded me of bath time at Mama's

How quiet the sound of comfort...

There in the basin of new beginnings,
a life not yet shaped-
not yet soiled

Pouring harder,
the water in my eyes
gave cover to a salty shine

Convenient, sometimes, Mother Nature...

Drenched and giggling,
the familiar cement wall stood unspoken
with carvings from yesterday's thoughts

"Breakers suck, heads rule,"
smeared on its face
as our boom box took its place below

Press play-
the blue rubber ball
pock-pocking back and forth

As sore palms,
squishy, hot air
finished off the hour of "out do"

Lightning drawn from a gold pen
leaped across the sky
as roars from jealous gods echoed

Heading home, we ran,
everything so clear-
like a dream

A road arrived in our eyes,
confused and elated all at once-
we took it

Houses smiling on either side,
a crossroad ahead-
no second thoughts

We moved on...

There was no sound,
the clouds scurried-
strands of color dangled in the air

Looking back,
the road evaporated-
a building mocking our experience

I said to my friend,
"It matters little where we've been-
we're here now"

What a marvelous look at the rain and the water as a gift of life and a symbol for a fresh start... I love the feel of rain as I feel it washing away the pollutants of everyday life just like it does for the earths atmosphere... the last stanza was the perfect finish for you are right it doesn't matter how you got where you are only that you are there. Bravo my friend.

Oh!!

I said to my friend,
"It matters little where we've been-
we're here now"

Sometimes I read things that make me jump out of my seat with emotion.... this did that. Now, take into consideration that I'm a highly emotional and potentially explosive personality to begin with.... LOL

This is so wonderful Jenny! The journey is written so incredibly well I still feel as if I am there... looking back on the road left behind and all that was experienced in this journey. The imagery is flawless.

More so however, is the depth of what is being said, which all wraps up perfectly in the end. It was that which caused me to jump up. Kind of like a "Eureka!" moment ... :-D

You have such talent!! I love your work....

This is a fav.

Such a deep piece to cause ourselves to do a lot of self reflecting and giving your thoughts to missed friends and times that were. I love the feeling that this piece left me with as I have found myself spending a little time today remembering the past and people that have come and gone. Life often gives those opportunities to remember times and people when we need to the most. I have lost a lot of friends over the years as we grew into different people and our lives became something more than just ourselves. I was actually talking to a friend of mine this evening. I was telling here about a group of friends I ran around with for quite awhile that I had to stop hanging around with as I found myself becoming a person that I fought so hard not to be. But while with them it seemed so easy to allow that person to resurface and I could not allow that. I love people and love meeting new people and holding the ones that come into your life for a reason very close to me, as I feel we learn from people and life. I say cheers to you and the journey my dear friend.

This is a wonderful recollection of memories. I felt a bit sad after reading this, as in some respects this mirrored the WC when it had bounce and life.
Looking back over life is where writers draw the most inspiration. I've been on a course and know of others where they suggest you write an autobiography - and from there you have a source for future work - if not about yourself, a year, time and place when different things happened.
Once of the amazing things about this poem is that it transcends boundaries and could have happened in the UK.
Great work and I forgive you about the cookies!

I remember as a child some of my favorite times where playing in the rain. We use to dam up the sides of the road to catch the warm summer rain into a pool where we would frolic. Thanks for the fun ride through this poetic memory lane.

I love this piece. It's beautiful and means so many things.

My favorite line in the entire poem:

How quiet the sound of comfort...

You say so much with those six words ... I remember when I was a little girl, I would sleep over at my grandma's house a lot. I loved nothing more than lying in my bed in the morning pretending to still be asleep and smell the maple syrup hot on the stove while my grandparents talked very, very quietly. The comfort of that quietness still fills me with peace. Thanks for bringing those things back to me. :)
