Disposable Generation

Disposable Generation

A Poem by Jennifer Elizabeth
"

Written a few years back, in response to the Patriot Act

"

It started with a dream of freedom

The will to die for our free choice

Liberty; over vivid vision

For our children, let's rejoice

Our little workers became reigning soldiers

Flags proudly reflected the gleaming sun

But if you look close at our Star-Spangled Banner

The threads are slowly coming undone

And I don't want to be a part

Of this disposable generation

Our morals died as power grew

An empire took over our nation

And I don't want to sell these freedoms

I've grown accustomed to humanity

You haven't got my vote on this one

I'm an American and I'll die to be free.

A righteous political statement. Well done. "The threads are slowly coming undone." was a very nice line and I'd say hands down my favorite. The poem has good structure as well similar to a narrative. It was simple and honest. I'm glad you chose to use common vernacular especially at the end. I hope you continue to develop your writing as you once did.

This reminds me so much of a song from way back when called Monster by the band Steppenwolf, there were three parts to it...America/Monster/Suicide all about how our country has turned its back on the dream for cash and carry. Look it up on youtube, you will like it I think. This is another great piece, you have talent to spare.

Unfortunately, I suspect most Americans would gladly trade their freedom for security. I liked your poem and thought it was very descriptive.

"And I don't want to be a part
Of this disposable generation"

"we are nobodies trying to be somebodies" Marilyn Manson
A similar sentiment, you make some very important observations, about life and wg=hat you do about it.
Accepting the stae of things is only the easiest solution in the immediate short term.
A good an interesting poem !
