“Lady Catherine, will you be attending the courts spring celebrations this evening?” I asked. Being Lady Catherine’s maid was not easy. She was in a constant state of turmoil. One minute she’d decide upon a course of action, the next she’d be angry at me for pursuing it. The loss of her little brother brings despair to her eyes every day.

“Lady Catherine!” I said a little louder than the duch or duchess would approve of. She sat upright in her bed the covers sliding into her lap, she glanced toward the window registering that she had been sleeping for longer that she wanted.

“Sadie, though I wish you could have woken me sooner, I doubt screaming at me to wake up was necessary.” She yawned and stretched, not minding me in the slightest.

“Sorry Lady Catherine but your mother would like to inform you that you will be wearing the blue dress if you are to attend the royal spring festivities this evening, in this case the purple heels would be most appropriate for the festivities.” I looked to her clothing filled wardrobe, most of the clothes she never wore anyway. Her purple wall coulure was highly out of season though it did contrast well with her black bed, she liked to were her mourning dress out and about, her mother never thought highly of this particular habit although Lady Catherine grew increasingly stubborn everyday (and seemed to be made of iron that not even kings would dare to grasp upon) her mother’s opinion never stopped her anyway. “Sadie, what time is it? I hope you have washed and dried my mourning gown for this evening if not I shall not be able to go!” She said that last part with over emphasised flare.” Lady Catherine I do believe that you are being a bit melodramatic don’t you think? And I do not think the men in the court will even take the slightest attraction to a mourning gown especially in your case so eat some cobble stone and harden up you foolish girl”

“Sadie you should know that I’m not looking for a man. NO.” Lady Catherine’s tone surprised me.  “If you do not attend the festivities in your allocated dress your mother and farther will surely frown upon you Catherine.” She gave an exasperated sigh and shrank back into her bed covers.

The room was so silent you heard a quiet sob and smelt the salty tang of tears beneath Catherine’s pillow.

The fact is that the loss of Cathies dear little brother will haunt her forever and she will forever be traumatised by the lifelessness and hollowing despair that is ripping her heart out piece by piece until she can’t bare it anymore.

Later that evening, Cathy did not attend the festivities. Wondering why, I went to check on her. We found her dead in her bed. She had been a target of murder, just as her brother. Clearly whoever this murderer was, could get into the palace.

I had to find this person, before the entire kingdom falls apart.
