Bagel Day

Bagel Day

A Poem by Jenna Kay

"It's a bagel day," I say to my mother
Another beautiful afternoon of clear blue skies and light spilling through the kitchen windows
She looks at me strange
"What does that even mean?" she asks, extremely confused
"Well," I start, already hearing the mocking in my mind I am sure to get for ever mentioning it, "on bright days, when the sky is completely clear, I want to eat a bagel.
On mornings when it's cloudy, but still light, I really want cereal.
On dark nights when it rains, I really want grilled cheese.
I don't really know why. Possibly something to do with my childhood."
Then she gives me that look
A joking smile as her eyes squint, her head tilted up and to the side, and her mouth open like she is trying "so hard" to capture every word I said on her own lips
"Right..." she sarcastically goes, "cause that's normal."
To me it is, Mom
You just can't see it

Very interesting concept for a poem. I kinds kind of see a hint of a theme that could be stronger with a few more edits.
