ConflictA Story by Jenna HardingAnother short piece that I wasn't really sure what to do withConflict Cool blue eyes, clear as crystal regarded the speaker carefully, watching as much as listening. Their color darkened suddenly, clouded by a tempestuous rage, an overwhelming anger that engulfed her. His words still hung between them, acrimonious; they seemed to turn the air stale, sucking the oxygen from it. Slowly the anger, the initial reaction that had been fuelled by his callous words, subsided to be replaced by a crushing feeling of hurt. It was as if his remarks had entered her body, seeped through her skin and had launched a merciless attack on her heart. She could feel it breaking in her chest, slowly and painfully being wrenched into a million pieces by the severity of his verbal attack on her. But although her heart broke and she was possessed by a deep and painful sense of hurt, of betrayal on the interior, her exterior remained stoic and hard. For once she was grateful of her Ice Queen characteristic. She stared at him without saying a word and though she could see the remorse evident in his softened hazel eyes, the damaged was already done. Wordlessly she turned on her heel and walked away from him, the click of her shoes against the concrete the only sound to be heard echoing around the basement. She maintained her composure until she reached her car. The moment the door clicked shut her walls came crumbling down and she allowed the torrent of pent up tears to flow freely. She sobbed quietly, revelling in the release but, inwardly, severely reprimanding herself for it. She had never felt so alone.
