Ode to a Friend Held Dear

Ode to a Friend Held Dear

A Poem by Jenna Harding

Ode To A Friend Held Dear

Hush now little one,

Come here I’ll dry your eyes.

Sit on my lap and I’ll tell you a story,

About castles and knights, about princesses and dragons.

They’ll wrap you up safe and warm like a blanket,

They’ll protect you from the horrors of the outside world

They’ll take you on magic carpet rides to far off, mystical places that

Exist only inside you and I.

Our secret. Our sanctuary.

We’ll walk through hot jungles with tigers and monkeys,

We’ll swim in deep oceans, make friends with mermaids and dolphins,

Then we’ll fly up high in the sky, soar past birds and clouds,

Say hello to the moon and play hide and seek with the stars.

We’ll glide over bustling cities and sleepy suburbs,

While far below us adults and children alike are united in slumber,

Oblivious to us as we float silently above their heads.

We’ll always be together little one, even the times we are forced apart.

We’re alike, you and I, one mind shared between tow bodies,

Kindred spirits, some might say.

A part of me will always be with you, wherever you will go,

As a part of you will always abide with me.

Now sleep little one, and may your dreams take you to ‘our places’,

And away from the hell in which our bodies are obliged to reside.

May they give you the hope and the strength you may need to awake,

When the dawn signals the arrival of yet another day.
