Yellow Umbrella

Yellow Umbrella

A Poem by Jennie Baron

Out on the street on a rainy day

A woman with a yellow umbrella caught my eye.

She’ll never know how the sight affected me

How cheery and jaunty it looked

Amid the gloom,

The fog on my car windows,

And the rain streaming down on them.

Please, please never let me be

One of those insufferably boring,

Eminently forgettable

Black-umbrella people.

A red one would be nice,

But I’m going to buy myself

The brightest yellow one I can find.

Lovely, Jennie! This is a great testament to those who strive to be different and not fall into the constant mold, which I can assume is the "black umbrella". I love the choice of color for the umbrella, what inspired it? I myself have a blue one (with polka dots) haha. :)

Enjoyed it a lot! Well done :):)

This is really cool. I too am afraid of becoming one of those "Black-umbrella" folks whose lives are so dull and depressing. Although I do have my moments. Great imagery. I loved it. Stay inspired.

Hi Jennie. We find true inspiration to reward ourselves with betterment in the most unusual places. I love that thought of buying a yellow umbrella. Shake your personality loose and escape the humdrum. Well done, alf

Oh wow, I adore the symbolism of this poem. It's a snapshot of 'ah ha' moment. A pivotal milestone, if you will. It's simplicity tells volumes too, with how the simplest of things can be moving and deeply felt. It's amazing how colors can lighten our mood and strike us in times as this. I also see the idea of being playful, and light hearted in order to enjoy the bad weather that life throws at us. This is a charming vision that you've shared, thank you for that. I see we have some commonalities too, music and region. :) Happy writing to you! Respectfully, blue angel

I'm so happy you liked it! I appreciate the positive word.
Very charming little poem. You clearly have a great talent for painting a vivid picture with the least amount of words possible, for example your first stanza here absolutely made me feel like I was watching the scene unfold, rather than merely reading it. A rare gift to be sure, and the message is a fantastic one. Thanks for posting. :)

There's nothing like colour on a dark day to lift the eyes from the puddles and the mind from anything and everything. There's a series of lovely scenes wrapped in feelings here, seems very real. And I love brollies!

Fun read. finely phrased.. and carrying me off and away with a grin! Thank you.
