Wrong beliefA Chapter by Misty_ProphetWhat would you do, if you found out that you were manipulated into believing in someone's protection, and all they ever did was lie?
Huge steel wall surrounded the city. It was ten meters tall and five meters thick. Stood there even before Kaden's birth, so more than twenty years. There was no way through it. Luckily they had an apartment in one of the highest buildings. It looked right over the wall. For what Kaden saw, and what they were told, outside the walls is just plain old grass, with rotten trees, miles and miles before the next city, and wild deranged animals roaming freely. Outside the wall... There is only death.
In time when the wall was built, about forty years ago, an earthquake shook the city. It destroyed several buildings and hundreds of lives. The city was relatively big. Now it has population of less than eighty thousand people. The land was plain, so it was rather easy to make the wall into a circle. Several minor earthquakes happened after the big one. Government sent scientist and engineers over the years to repair the buildings blueprints. They secured everything, so the city somewhat easily survived another big earthquake. It was the last one so far, about two years ago. City recovered in matter of months. Scientist did their job pretty good. Vegetables were grown on top of the buildings, but considering the sun was blocked by dark clouds for most of the day, they weren't called quality food. Every three months a huge truck would come, full of supplies. In the city, there were four districts. Industrial, military, market and the residence area. Kaden and his family lived in residential, and they only visited the market district, where the universities were. No one was allowed in the other two. There was no jail in the city. Anyone who had the guts to steal or kill, and then got caught, was sent to the lab to be used in experiments. It was a cruel punishment, but rather efficient. Kaden smirked and wiped his black hair of the face. He had dad's hair and his dark blue eyes. Kara was starting to look more and more like mother. Frankie already looked just like her. He noticed how father's look always becomes sad, whenever he sees Francesca. Life became really hard. He picked up a rock and furiously threw it into the wall. It bounced with a loud noise, so he steered his path away from the spot, as fast as he could, without looking too suspicious. It felt like living in a can. He walked down the road he knew all so well. Everyday he goes this way to the university. Everyday he sees the same people. The old hag, selling handmade clothes; a girl, several years older than Francesca, standing on a corner of the building, waiting for a customer; the fat guy, staring from his first story window; couple of random children, two old men playing chess on a bench, and couple of his classmates that live in the area. And then the soldiers. Seemed as every second person in the city streets, was a soldier. They were all tall, lookalikes, with strong arms and broad shoulders. All the time they had helmets on, with the visor down. It helped protect them from the disease. They carried a big gun, that could shoot all kinds of munition. The small one for stunting people, the regular bullets and the large ones, like a grenade. Their uniform was black, and they had belts with spare ammo, around the thighs, hips and even on their arms. On the back of their uniform, it said DPU, for Disease Protection Unit. Dayner said they came straight from D.C. by a chopper, once the wall was completed. They were supposed to guard us. Protect us from the virus. But that seemed to be the last thing on their minds. They just controlled the illness, by isolating the sick persons. As soon as someone becomes sick, they grab them and send down to the underground facility. Down to the hospital, where his mother died, just a week after she got sick. No one ever came out. No one... - Thinking about escaping, again, ha mate? - An arm fell on Kaden's shoulders, and when he turned around, a familiar face greeted him. - Matt! Do you want us to get arrested? - Chill out, I'm careful... I've waited for that guard to pass by, before I said anything. - With his ginger hair, and such pale skin, he looked as if out of this world. In these dark times, Matt was probably the only one who could smile, in the whole city. He was like a ray of light for Kaden. - So, did you notice how clouds got darker these days? And we can't even see the sun for more than an hour anymore... I mean... What is that all about? - Interesting as you always are, I must leave you now... I've got a class to catch. - Oh that's right... Mr Electrical engineer, has to save the world... - Matt said it with a silly look on his face. Kaden didn't say anything. He was about to leave, when Matt's voice got serious. - Come here, I've got something to show you. Matt led the way. He was constantly looking around, trying to figure out if he was being followed. They reached an abandoned building, with it's front door labeled with stickers saying: Dangerous! Don't come in! Virus site! Stay out! Seized by the government! Then he realized, Matt is about to enter the building. Kaden grabbed him by the jacket, and pulled away from the door. - What the hell are you doing?! Not only we could get arrested, but we could get infected! This is the building with that family that got sick, all at once! Are you mad?! - Relax Kaden! I've been here before. Nothing ever happened here. Nothing! They just spread that rumor, because they want us to stay out... Inside, there is... Oh God, you must see it! Come on. Matt stood next to the opened door, looking at Kaden. - Trust me... After a few moments of reluctance, Kaden followed him. They went inside of the house and Matt gestured him to stay silent. They moved slowly, towards the door in the middle of the house. They had to squat, because of the windows and passing guards. Kaden feared they'll be seen, but Matt wasn't concerned about that at all. He was concentrating on reaching the doors. Finally they did. Steadily, Matt opened them, with a small squeak. There were stairs leading downwards. Still squatting, they crossed a couple of steps, before Kaden saw it. Wall was all made of glass, standing in front of them. From the floor up to the ceiling, all glass. It looked right inside of a lab. There were scientist, in white coats, some of them sitting at their desks, some of them carrying test tubes and putting them inside of giant machines. Everything was white and sterile. On the other side of the lab, there were doors, with a pair of guards standing besides them. For some time Matt and Kaden stayed put, enchanted by the view. Then a couple of soldiers came into the lab, carrying someone, presumably sick. One of the scientists approached them, stabbing a needle into the neck of a not so calm patient. He immediately collapsed and then the soldiers put his body onto one of the tables. Scientist injected a few more things in him, made a small cut on his chest and walked away with filled test tubes. Soldiers took the patient and carried his body towards the glass. Matt shoved Kaden to move, so they could get out, before soldiers could see them. Adrenalin rushed through their veins, as they ran outside. They were running and running for a couple of blocks, finally stooping at the edge of a park. No one was following them. No one saw. No one knew they were there. - What the bloody hell? - Kaden coughed panting. - I know! I keep asking myself that, ever since I found that place... - Matt was still trying to catch his breath. - How long...? How long do you know about it? - They both relied on their knees, struggling with air, conscience, and truth. - About two weeks now... - And what... What did I just see? - Not sure. But those bodies, they never get out of the house. For that I'm sure. - You mean, they stack 'em in the basement? - No man... Worse. You ever noticed that chimney on the house? And how it's always smoking, even though the house is empty... - Matt looked him straight into the eyes. - No way, na-ah... They wouldn't... - Kaden shook his head in disbelief. - He is being taken into hospital, underground, just as everyone else who is sick... My mother was in the hospital, and about a week after she was taken, I had the letter stating she died because of the consequences of a virus. C'mon Matt, why would they lie...? - Look, I'm sorry 'bout your mom... But my sister was taken too, you know that... I had the same letter. But, the truth is right here under our noses. Truth is that... they f*****g burn those bodies... © 2012 Misty_ProphetReviews
