Fight Against Meter Sonnet

Fight Against Meter Sonnet

A Poem by Jeff Miller
"

A sonnet written with meter, to fight against it.

"

Shall I change who I am?

Shall I have no purpose?

Like a shepherd without lamb

That shall only make it worse

Do not chain me to a gate

Each poem has worth

You shall not discriminate

Do not lie as Unferth

Did to mighty Beowulf

I do not need a sword

My meaning shall engulf

You and your evil hoard

My pen is sharper

My pen is stronger

This is a sonnet, which follows a 7-6-7-6-7-6-7-6-7-6-7-6-5-5 syllable count, about why I don't like meter. I think it's cool if you want to use meter...but poetry is different today. You should be able to just write and express yourself without being confined to only a certain amount of syllables. It can still be a great poem with a lot of meaning...even if there is no meter. Meter is a great form, but you shouldn't have to use it.

Nice one J Mil. I do agree that every poem has worth but this does not mean that it should never be examined critically. Of course poetry does not require form Erza Pound wrote " No good poetry is ever written in a manner twenty years old for to write in such a manner shows conclusively that the writer thinks from books, convention and cliche, not from real life" Suffice it to say I really like this poem despite it being chained to a gate.

I couldn't agree more! As a more free-verse writer, it frustrates me in school if we have to use meter. So, I totally understand where you're coming from.
Great write :)
