Senior Year

Senior Year

A Poem by Jeff Miller
"

It took me about an hour to write this today.

"

Senior year

Supposedly the most fun year of all

The buzz and hype is all you hear

You were excited at the beginning, in fall

Every day was fun

Each day was a new experience

You could still play in the sun

And of your previous three years you would reminisce

Now the first quarter is done

But you’re still growing strong

You’re still having fun

It seems nothing could go wrong!

Now your first semester is finished

It was very enjoyable

And all of your classes, you had passed

So far it has been stable

How fast time has flown!

But your spirit is getting weathered

The mighty wind has blown!

Carving your attitude, with will power scattered

Each second of every hour of each day drags on

Your schedule becomes a boring routine

All traces of excitement are gone

You beg for the next day to have a new scene

You feel as if tomorrow is no different than yesterday

You pray for some new excitement

Your newfound condition is causing a fray

Now your constant emotion is lament

Forsooth, all you can feel is sorrow

Each day holds you prisoner, such permanence of cement

It feels like there is no tomorrow…

Why does each day have to torment?

You have caught the unwavering fever

Known as ‘Senioritis’

You curse the fabric of time’s weaver

This is high school’s arthritis

Your brain feels enflamed

Each mental stretch hurts

This happens to all seniors, no matter what they were named

Your happiness only arrives in spurts

It is inescapable

This condition has you bound

Graduation feels so far away, it seems like a fable

Time moves like a clock that hasn’t been wound

You look forward to spring break

Hoping for a miracle

For heaven’s sake!

 End this never-ending cycle!

I wish and I pray

That tomorrow will be a new day

That I overcome this condition

And look forward to the tradition

That approaches us on May the 28th

So let’s have a little faith

Let’s start to savor

Our young adult behavior

Do not let this illness become fatal

And keep our eyes on the prize…the ultimate dismissal!

It's the first time I've read a poem with this kind of perspective on senior year. The usual ones I've read always contain mixed emotions of excitement and dread, but that's what make yours unique. I don't share the same opinion, though, but as I read your poem, I managed to see where you're coming from. Good Job.

Keep Writing. ^___^
