Grow Up

Grow Up

A Poem by Robert Luna
"

This was written after a conversion with a dear friend of mine. We were talking about how people call us dreamers and other colorful descriptions. Hope you enjoy

"

Grow up

.

Grow up Robert.. just grow up

Something I hear more times than I care mention

Really no sure what they mean

Is it because I still have dreams

Even though

I have no idea what I want to be

other than just me

Or is it that you want me to be like you

Allowing money to make the decision for

everything and all that I do

Giving up friends

For dividends

Being more worried about making the Benjamins

Allow a suit and tie to define who I am

Askew my view so far I wouldn’t know

where it is, I exactly stand

Sit back and watch the depleting

ultimate deleting of musicians, painters, and writers

The real life fighters who are dying

Creativity giving way to salaries, and job security

Awaiting 401k plans to reach maturity

Am I naïve too believe

I can change the world

with the stroke of my pen

Shouting out my words

Allowing them to be carried by the wind

as I stand toe to toe with a foe

even though I know I won’t win

But I’ll never stop swing these words

Like a cardboard swords at invisible dragons

Because I couldn’t imagine

Being define be the 9 to 5 only to find

time has passed me by

Sowing your seed only to find you sold your soul

Reaching to the sky

for your piece of the America pie

and then you find

It’s rotten on the inside

Realizing you have no one else to blame

Being left emotionally lame

Playing the game in search for some sort of fame

And it seems you mocking me

Gives you the means to fulfill your dreams

of being better than me

Telling me to Grow up

Shut up

Stop spouting verbal throw-up

but the funny thing is

You were once like me

Now it’s just a tale you tell

about your youth that has slipped away

as you search for the truth that’s for sale

to fill that gaping hole in your soul

Even though my journey maybe set for a bumpy road

I find comfort to know it was all worth it

And you say you pity me

But really it’s me that pities you

Even though my journey maybe set for a bumpy road
I find comfort to know it was all worth it

But really it's me that pities you

Ending up with a worthwhie life is a trick in itself :)
Growing up , hmmm not sure what that means
but plenty who have live to regret it
and dreams keep us alive

Wow, this poem is breathtakingly emotional. It has that raw emotion of someone who feels looked down upon, somebody who is determined to be better than those who claim righteousness over them.

This was a really comforting poem. It reached out to me & made me feel happy for you but sad for a lot of others. Well done, a truly great poem!

Wow! thought provoking for sure.
As a mother reading this, all I want to do is allow my children "time" to be creative, learn, grow and find what it is that is best for them in this life. I must admit
I find myself guilty of saying "grow up" a time or two, this puts things in prespective for me.
I know the choices of losing ones creative self to the world at a young age. It is "not" the life I want for them... Thank you Robert, this deeply touched me!

I like the real-life topic and the thoughts it provokes. The words that you use and the way it flows kind of make it sound like it could be a rap song. Haha!! Maybe you should be a rapper. :p

very provocative, shows the condescension of 'the suits' towards those of us who are true poets and who see things the way they really are.

I couldn't believe I hadn't reviewed this latest piece of your work. And then when I got into I wondered how I could have read it and not left some words. Must have seen it over on Facebook. That's all I can figure. . . You are such an inspiration to so many people. And with your background, you are poised to be a mentor and teacher to the young people who surround you. You've learned some hard lessons, walked some rocky roads and even if you still have stars in your eyes . . . hold fast to those hopes and dreams. Through those, real change will come . . . one day.

When I think of all the places you could be right now . . . I am particularly glad to find you with the principles and beliefs that you hold dear. Much love.

This is a beautiful piece. I wanted to scream all the way through it, "YES!" Yes, yes! You understand. Why is it that people like us are told to grow up? I honestly think that we have more depth to us and more insight. We see the world more clearly, all the pains and passions and hopes and joys and sadness. Everything with vivid clarity. And others don't. Sometimes, I wish I could be more like "the others" because sometimes it hurts more than I can bear, but the happy things and the simple things, I draw more appreciation from than others. What is life without passion?

I don't think you need to grow up ... 'cause if you have do, then so do I.
