Art

Art

A Poem by Robert Luna

Baptized in fluorescent light
finding religion in the greeting card aisle

Who would have known hallmark had it right
Sleep walking just never dreaming

Scene from Night of the Living Dead
every song on the radio
is suddenly speaking to me

tongue tied and twisted
losing myself in the moment
Looking at myself in the mirror
there in the back of my brain

wondering whatever happened to me

not liking what or who I see
Coming to the realization
Art is imitation of life
but life imitates TV.
I finally pick up the pen
to write this theme song
that’s playing in my head
Eardrums bursting from the pressure
Feeling like a superhero high on life and caffeine

just addicted to an idea of a beautiful life
never wanting to leave this stage
so I drove my car so fast

that I smashed into heaven’s gate
and then I descended

it was a place I was never meant to be
As all the chemicals have become meaningless
I realize, I must have been dreaming

laying there naked for the world to see

screaming “look what you done to me”
then my words return feeling empty and hollow
knowing the truth is so hard to swallow

There I am left to face myself again
and the reality that awaits me

What an intriquing title for such a piece...art comes in many forms even the written word and you have certainly captured an essence of Art that is transcending here. I believe you go beyond that typical look at it - the nonchalant one where noone even notices what is there...thanks for that. Great job!

Okay typically I don't read other reviews before I coment on a piece, but this one I felt compelled to see what others were saying. I have to say that I don't think you are talking about "Art" at all or not in the way others are thinking, not that they are wrong, we each have our own take on it. I think this is more a piece of self reflectin on how your life compares to what you see in others, what you read in books and perhaps on here, even what you see when you look at paintings or photographs. No matter what intent you had when you wrote this I absolutely love it. It takes courage to look inside and see what it is you hide from the world, to compare how you stack up to others and make needed changes. It's all about growth sometimes and not just in inches. The flow was A++++, the lines just rolled off the toung one after the other as I read them, and I like that you tossed in a bit of rhyme but didn't make it a priority. If you had I think it would have detracted from the content of the piece. This is another keeper for me.

Whelp,

Ya did it again. I love the image and the message. There is an Eminime (sic?) song this reminds me of a little. We really are surrounded by art when you think about it and likewise that means many of us are artists even though so some may not realize it at first. Sometimes I can get soo excited by art in its various forms too. I think you've made a wonderfully artful poem about it.

Excellent writing!!

(I didn't notice the two lines you referred to)
