One to Save Me

One to Save Me

A Poem by Jayne Ann Saporito

Walking down the gravel path

The grit beneath my feet

Sun giving me a good heat bath

Carrying my life

Like water in a bucket.

Sat down, gave out on the ground

Because my legs were weak

And my skin was turning brown

Carrying my life

Like water in a bucket.

Then I saw him standing there

Eyes the blue of a faded denim sky

The sunlight shining in his hair

And I thought to myself,

Will you be the one to save me?

He said, “Girl, will you be alright,

It’s dangerous in the heat

And never safe at night,

And I asked of him,

“Will you be the one to save me?”

Gave me his hand and I slowly stood,

Asked why he cared and he said

He was one who always would

And he kindly asked,

“Why do you need someone to save you?”

I cried, “I don’t know, I don’t know, let it go.”

But his arms were so strong

I didn’t want him to know

That I’d been so weak

And needed someone to save me.

He gave me a cool drink, I went on my way

But I couldn’t forget his kindness

Or that fateful day

When I’d almost given up my hope

And set my dreams aside forever.

I carried on, carried on, carried on

Despite daily pain and loss

my life wound on and on

my sorrow leaden

my heart in chains

But he came my way

And asked, “How’re you faring today?”

Wanted to scream to the sun and the rain

Thank God he’s there

And I found him again

I just smiled and felt no pain

From the weight of a bucket

Full of woe

He slowly took my hand

Said, “It’s time we left this road

Take a different stand”

And he tossed my blues away

Like water from a bucket.

We started a life that was new

Put aside our pasts

And knew the dark was through

And we shared our lives

Like fresh water from a bucket.

Then I saw him standing there

Eyes the blue of a faded denim sky

The sunlight shining in his hair

And I thought to myself,

Will you be the one to save me?

And he was the one who saved me,

Saved me.

I'd be very interested to hear the music that goes with this song. I can see how the words would become emotionally alive with some haunting melody. This also brings to mind some of the images people have expressed when speaking of a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal, present, and eternal savior.

You are without question as gifted a writer as I have read. I certainly can hear this piece to a haunting melody. It is so full of life, and all it's burdens, yet you have laced it with hope and light. You are incredible. Rain..

****standing ovation****
Wonderful song, Jayne! So beautiful. I love your words choices in all your poems, and this is no exception. You are as gifted a poet/lyricist as you are a story teller! Must I call you Superwoman now??
: )
