An American Moment

An American Moment

A Poem by Jay Levon

I put 5 dollars in the jukebox,
and played 'Folsom Prison Blues'
20 times.
It's one of my favorite songs,
but mostly I wanted to piss off
the regulars.
No one seemed to notice.
I tapped my snake-skin boot
to the boom-chicka-boom,
and lost myself to the dirt
and Old Testament that is
Johnny's voice.
After the song faded for the 20th time,
I paid what I owed,
and staggered toward
another starry night.
In the distance, a train whistle blew.
In the distance, a coyote sang.
In that moment,
it felt good to be American.
