A children's write, but also a story that most can enjoy.
I was born one day at the Denver Mint. Nothing more than an bit of alloy sent Into the machine to be shaped and pressed, Then into the lab to pass the weight test.
Once I'd passed every test, I was rolled, And sent to a big city bank to be sold To a business man who asked for some change. Sitting in his register with the others was strange.
Then came the day I was pulled out of the drawer, And put into a pocket with lint balls galore. But I didn't have to stay there very long Before I was pitch to someone singing a song.
I was stolen from that hat by the grubby hands Of a little girl following her parent's demands. She gave all the others up to her dad, But me she kept back, and I was so glad!
Under her blanket, she kept me at night, Her fingers dirty, her grip so tight. Til one day into a bakery we did stray. "Can I have a loaf of bread? I can pay."
So into the hand of the baker I went. He looked down at me, just one little sent; Then back at the girl with such a hungry face. She looked like she hadn't eaten in days .
"We have such a special for you today. Two loaves of bread, and you don't have to pay. Come back tomorrow again and we'll see, But I think this here is your lucky penny."
So back I went to the little girl's fist, And happy I was... her love I'd have missed! The very next day we went right back; He left me alone and gave her a sack.
Then one night by his back door we stayed. The little girl held me tightly and prayed, "My Daddy is gone. I hope to up above But please give me a family to love."
And there we sat 'til a quarter to four When the baker and his wife came to door, And opened their hearts to the girl left alone Making a place for her in their home.
So here I sit on the wall in a frame; Lucy's Lucky Penny is now my name. And though framing a penny to some seems odd, Lucy knows I was guided by the hand of God.
Some stories have the touch of heart that leave hope behind...

a penny or more for your thoughts...i have this penny...my dad and i were both big collectors....the wheat pennies were so cool...
i grew up in the fifties so was able to collect many of the old ones...back then even the first ones from 1909 were floating around...but it's the specialness of the collection that is important to me...my dad passed his on to me and and i combined with mine...not worth that much in money...but in sentiment...means the world...those keepsakes to keep under our pillow and safe within our mind.

This was the result of a challenge topic I think. I added it because Aaron wanted some of my children's writes to read to his daughter. It has the hallmarks of all of my very early writes when I was disciplined about meter and rhyme. I still believe that they are necessary for children's writes. It keeps kids interested.

I think its the combination of the tone and the images of that child being alone, cold, and dirty, and her realization of how lucky she was. Because I can never find it in the words alone there are no strong emotional words in this write. Yet it inspires deep emotion in the readers.
I love this and collect old coins when I have opportunity to do so. As a student of history, the journey of money has always fascinated me and your piece has just brought back so many great memories. I have collected money from Spain, Holland, France, Britain, the US and of course Canada and Newfoundland (when it was its own country). Thanks for sharing.

So much nostalgia. As a child I used to be fascinated by the stories coins must have. An early introduction to abstract concepts for most kids I imagine--'don't put coins in your mouth, you don't know where they've been!' I really like this piece, in case you haven't noticed!
