Volley

Two enemy's face off
On a court of battle,
Looking for each other's Achilles's heel.
Several tips reveal
A point of weakness.
Let's see how a shutdown feels.

The opposition jumps,
Caught in the net,
As skillfully the shank sinks toward ground.
Another hard-hitting kill
Served up by an ace,
Who reloads for another round.

Skilled members of the Force
Slam spikes down the throat;
Yes, another one down and in.
And they set it up
For the next kill to take place.
All they want is a final win.

We're at last point--
set, match, and tourney--
Opposers are going down!
The serve comes back over,
A dig blocked by the setter.
The crowd is not making a sound.

The ball is set to the Outside Hitter,
Who's ready and
Determined to win this game.
With a vertical jump, unsurpassed,
And a spike, so hard and blurringly fast,
It leads her to Tourney MVP fame.

Dedicated to Yelle, tourney MVP 9/4/04

This was written for my oldest niece who was a college team volleyball captain until they discovered a heart defect.

For those who know nothing of the sport, I leave you a glossary of used terms.

Shank- a serve that is tipped and drops to the floor. (point)
Caught in the net (point)
Ace- a serve that is missed (point)
Kill- point made
Slam -spike over the net (point)
Dig- a defensive save from a spiked ball
Challenge-players from both teams meet at the net for control of the ball.
Setter- middle position that controls offensive and defensive plays by passing the ball.
Outside Hitter- left front position that plays both offense and defense. .Usually the high point player.

This brings back so many fond memories of coaching junior volleyball in my senior year of high school (as part of a phys-ed project) and to playing a game that I love, and still play from time to time. I think i may have even broken a sweat on this court as I watched from the side lines. Well-played, Jan... thanks for sharing
