What Are Words

What Are Words

A Poem by Jay Parker

What Are Words?

Are they Love?

Are they Knowledge?

Are they Strength or Experience?

Words are nothing...

Words are the Exhalation of breath,

The puckering and spreading of lips

As your tongue darts from the back of your mouth,

To the tips of your teeth;

And for what?

We have achieved Communication

But how do we convey that which matters most?

What is it like to lay in the grass,

Staring up at the sky on a warm summer day.

Describe to me the way your heart beat in your chest

When you fell in love for the first time.

How you wanted to dance and laugh

And hide and cry all at once.

Tell me in words,

How beautiful your wife was,

On her wedding day...

You can't.

It's not possible.

Words fail us at times like this and we say;

You had to be there,

She was breath-taking,

I was Speechless

The only way to convey to another person how Incredible,

How Beautiful

How Amazing something is,

Is to simply call it Indescribable.

Words are great tools,

But the most powerful emotions,

The most meaningful experiences,

Cannot be captured in Words,

Should not be captured in words!

Love cannot be felt between the pages of a book,

True heart wrenching pain cannot be found in the ink of a poem,

Life is not meant to be described,

It's meant to be lived!

Words are the Exhalation of breath,

The puckering and spreading of lips

As your darts from the back of your mouth,

To the tips of your teeth;

Without breath,

What words would be spoken.
