Life

A friend remarked that no matter how hard she tries, she can’t win. That got me thinking about life, mortality, and the old saying, “Life sucks…and then you die. This is the result:

Life is just a Red Queen’s race

You run and run to stay in place.

 

The road is long, the surface rough.

Your very best?  It’s just enough.

 

Each day a struggle, each a war.

With not a clue of what’s in store

 

But that’s okay, and I don’t mind

‘Cause Death, he marks the finish line.

That line from Alice in Wonderland has haunted me my whole life, I'm glad to see it put into a poem or at least poetically referenced. It reads very smoothly with no forced rhymes or incongruities. Thank you for this delightful offering.

Wow, yeah death is the end result of life. Life's a challenge, sometimes we win, most times we lose. An obstacle we can face everyday but eventually it all comes to a close. I like your metaphor with the Red Queen, reminds me of Alice in Wonderland and the Red Queens saying "Off with their head." Thanks for sharing, I found it be candid, and nicely penned.
