The News

The News

A Chapter by Kiddo

It was a dull, grey afternoon. Normal as any day, I did feel saddened as my Grandfather, Jimmy, was sick. His health was deteoriating every day. Minute by minute his life drained, slowly he was fading away. My grandmother had obviously noticed this and wouldn't leave his side for a moment as deep down she knew his time was coming to an end, his gaze was distant, his skin pale. In all he was a shadow of his former self. Every morning I awoke, fretting, waiting for my mum to call my name gently and then break the news, then burst into tears.

I awoke the next morning puzzled. When. If I was dreaming I heard a cry. But this was not the ordinary cry of an abandoned child, this would send chills down your back, shatter glass. When I confronted my mum she just nodded as if in agreement, then turned away swiftly and resumed my sisters' breakfast. I knew not to ask more of it as it would agitate her so I dropped the subject and walked out the door heading to that horrible, glorified school. The day dragged. Everyone seemed to know the news of my grandfather and looked at me with pity. All except my best friend Padraig. He knew I hated it, to be looked down on. So he tried to be himself. That however was NOT a good idea as Padraig was the type that couldn't sit still for a second. He seemed to either run, jump, skip or roll everywhere he went. So after calming down my friend after a brief race from the yard to the school's main door we went to class. The classes were slow. Maths has to be the worst subject of all. The teacher hates me and gives me the hardest questions. I want to shoot the guy who invented algebra. Thankfully that was our last class and on my way home I told the busdriver to take me to my aunt's house but his reply made my heart sink. He saidn "Your mam wants ye home, says it's important." My instincts immediatly indicated it was my grandfather. When I walked toward the house I got a very brief sensation. It felt as if I was in a freezer. That lasted at most a second or two. Smoke billowed out of the chimney and at that instance I knew something bad had happened as the fire was only lit on rare occasions....
