Luck

Luck

A Chapter by Java
"

A small chapter of Introduction to Free Will delving into the concepts of luck, chance, odds and the butterfly effect.

"
Luck. Chance. Odds. However you choose to word it, it is a factor that indirectly controls our free will. You
can't make the free choice to jump if you were unfortunately born with one leg. You can't drive to the store
to buy a scratch card if your car unluckily doesn't start. On the contrary, you can't buy that luxury mansion
if you didn't win the lottery 30 years prior. Many psychological, philosophical and scientific concepts attempt
to define luck as its own concept however, it is extremely difficult near impossible to truly put a label on
luck.

Let's say a homeless man began to develop late onset schizophrenia and became a serial killer, one of this
man's victims was a 15-year-old boy. If this boy survived he would have became the POTUS who finally achieved
world peace. Unfortunately, because he passed away, this never happened. As a result, millions of people died
in a global conflict that would have been narrowly avoided if that boy had not been murdered. Who is to blame
for the lives lost? The 15-year-old boy? The homeless serial killer? The world leaders during the conflict?
Well, perhaps we should dig a bit deeper into this scenario. Why was this man homless in the first place? An
ancestor of his committed suicide 150 years ago, if this ancestor had not died, they would have won the
lottery; therefore preventing the serial killer's homelessness and subsequent schizophrenia. Okay, so is
this ancestor to blame for the deaths? No let's say dig deeper, shall we. Why did this ancestor commit suicide?
He was suffering from major depressive disorder.... so, are hormones to blame?

This is where the two opposing perspectives from the previous chapter come into play, did this ancestor
voluntarily make the free choice to die or are hormones responsible for his death?

It is vital that you make a choice, for this controls your entire outlook on life.

No such thing as luck. Things that happen were always going to. Like COVID, for example.
