Hera's WrathA Poem by Jason van DongenA short poem about the young Heracles.Glorious gift of Hera, Alcmene named the child, When jealous Hera heard the name, the more was she reviled By the guileless babe, as he was her husband’s son, But not of Hera born, for fair Alcmene was the one, That mighty Zeus had chosen. The vows to Hera made, Were scorned by Zeus. Hera swore she’d slay the babe. She dispatched a pair of serpents with the dread command, To be her swift assassins, but with his blameless hand, The babe crushed one then both the serpents before they could complete, Their task for Hera, and threw their twitching corpses down about his feet. © 2012 Jason van DongenReviews
