A Story by JMumford

Jacob was the priest’s son, best friend to Verity, a tall kind character with a heart of gold. He’d been in training to follow in his father’s footsteps for the last two weeks so he’d been desperate to see Verity as soon as he could. Jacob and Verity had been inseparable since they were children. Verity would always start the mischief so his father didn’t really approve of their friendship. That didn’t stop Jacob, against his father’s wishes they’d spend every moment they could together. Vee’s mother approved of him though, of course she would be being the priest’s son. She’d been planning their wedding for years. “Verity!” an excited Jacob yelled up to her. Verity knew that voice, a voice of safety, someone she could trust. As soon as she saw him she threw herself at him, clinging on so tight. “Never go anywhere again!” She wouldn’t let go of him just yet, she’d missed him so much. “Verity what’s wrong?” puzzled by her reaction he held her close, her heartbeat pulsating through her chest. “We need to talk. in private.” She took his hand and led him into the black forest. “Come this way!” They climbed up to the treehouse they’d built when they were younger. No one knew about it so it was their safe place if anything ever was to go wrong. They sat as she took a deep breath in. “I’ve known you all my life and what I’m about to confess must never be repeated.” Jacob became extremely alarmed. “You know you can trust me. You know that!” Silence stood for the next five minutes. Trying to put the pieces in an order they’d make sense but then she realized none of it made sense. “These freak weather occurrences.” She paused. “Yeah I did hear about that. I was too busy studying.” As he interrupted her he knew she had something to do with it. It was written all over her face. He knew she was in danger.

“I came across some ancient scripts whilst studying, according to legend this is just the start. I never got a chance to read on, my father quickly confiscated the scripts. Do you think it may be true?”  Verity became at ease, finally someone she could talk too about this burden. “Who was your father Verity?” He knew this was a sensitive subject but these were desperate times. “You know I don’t know that!” she snapped at him. “Verity I’m trying to help you! According to legend it’s the power from an elder’s child that would cause this. Years ago there started off to be ten elders… how many do we have now? Nine. exactly!” She gasped with awareness. “Apparently they’d banished the tenth… and well. this is hard to say… but they killed his son in fear he would grow up and seek revenge.” So if this was true, Verity did have a father. and a brother! “You don’t seem upset Vee?” She knew deep down all along. She lent her head against his chest and listened to his heartbeat.

They sat in the tree gazing up at the moonlit sky, billions of stars glistening, shooting across the sky. Verity began to heat up, her heart pumping aggressively. “Oh no not again!” Jacob sat up and grabbed Vee’s face with both hands. “Look at me, focus Verity you can control this!” A red flame filled her eyes. Shaking, the earth below started to rumble. “Verity you can do this!”

She calmed her breathing and the grounds shaking diminished. The flame was still there, she focused on the unlit campfire, raised her hand when ferocious flames belted from her eyes, she needed a bit more practice as she stamped out the surrounding fire. As she glanced at Jacob she noticed a glowing light around him, as if he were Christ himself.

“Vee what are we going to do about this?” She paced around the burnt ground, her eyes lit up with a plan. “Jacob, can you get hold of those scripts your Dad took away?” Verity knew this would be a big ask from Jacob, he was always so pure, doing anything sneaky just wasn’t not in his nature. However, his unspoken devotion to Verity was stronger. “If I can get those it may reveal who all the elders were… who my father was… who I am?”

“It won’t be easy Vee but I’ll do it for shaking diminished.
