Breakup

Breakup

A Poem by Jared Orlando

It’s because I’m short isn’t it?
I’m the same size
As when you met me,
You know.
That’s not a thing that
Changes overnight.
Is it because I snore?
I barely snore.
Do I even snore?
I should record myself
And see
If I snore or not.
Is it Mark?
Do you love Mark, now?
No, no, he does that thing
With his hands
That you hate,
As if he has just finished
Washing his hands.
Or did you get over that
And now it’s the one thing
You love about him?
Did that make you love him?
Does it make him seem clean?
Is it because I can’t cook?
It’s not that I can’t,
I just don’t,
And I won’t,
Because I don’t want to.
Restaurants are good
At cooking.
They cook for us.
They have years of experience.
They pass health code.
They rarely have to worry about
Smoke alarms.
Is it my build?
Yeah, you want someone who,
For fun,
Runs stairs..
For fun,
They run up and down
Stadium seats.
Is that it? Should I run?
So I can come home
With a two-toned shirt
Created from the sweat I exude
When I’m just running stairs
For fun?
Grunting like a boar?
Is that why you always ask me
To bring you to the zoo?
Didn’t we meet Mark at the zoo?
Is it because of my job?
Do you rather I work at the zoo
Like Mark?
I knew I should’ve never
Bought that membership.
You can have the membership.
Zoos are dead to me.
