Calm and Quiet

Calm and Quiet

A Poem by Jared Orlando

From yards away I could see a face
Reflected on the hardcover sleeve of Kafka on the Shore
Back upright against a weathered bench
She was staring at the water
Watching the crests break into themselves
She wore a brick red dress
Speckled with sweet, small white flowers
Her wrists covered with bands and rope
Hair bundled up, lady-like and confident
Feet bare and nested in the grass
But beyond where the ocean meets the sky
Was where she seemed to be
When I sat down beside her
I searched for what stole her attention
Reaching out, I took her hand
Folding it into mine
They were cold despite the heat
Dry despite the humidity
She did not budge, forever focused
On the crashing in the void
Something much heavier than now, than me
I wish I knew her name,
What she was thinking about
Wishing I could ride the waves of her mind
Wake to find her dress folded neatly somewhere
Calm and quiet in my Silver Lake apartment
